Strikeout-to-walk ratio

K/BB Ratio Calculator

Calculate strikeouts per walk from strikeouts and walks. A simple command-and-control ratio that doesn't need innings pitched.

K/BB

K/BB 4.25. 85 strikeouts and 20 walks.

How this result was calculated

  • 85 K ÷ 20 BB = 4.25

Meaning

What is K/BB?

K/BB is strikeouts divided by walks. It compresses two of the most pitcher-controlled outcomes into one ratio: how many batters you strike out for each free pass you issue.

Because it ignores innings, K/BB can look great in a tiny sample. Pair it with K/9 and BB/9 once the innings pile up.

Formula

The formula

K/BB = Strikeouts ÷ Walks

No innings are required. When walks equal zero, the ratio is undefined (this calculator does not print infinity).

How to calculate

Step by step

  1. Total strikeouts.
  2. Total walks.
  3. If walks are greater than zero, divide strikeouts by walks.
  4. Round to two decimal places.

Worked example

120 strikeouts and 35 walks is 120 ÷ 35 ≈ 3.43 K/BB. That means roughly three-and-a-half strikeouts for every walk.

Related

K/9 and BB/9 are rates per nine innings. K/BB is their ratio without a workload denominator. A pitcher can improve K/BB by striking out more, walking less, or both — check the separate rates to see which.

FAQ

Common questions

How do you calculate K/BB?

Divide strikeouts by walks. Example: 120 K ÷ 35 BB ≈ 3.43.

What is a good K/BB ratio?

In MLB, around 2.5–3.0 is solid and 3.5+ is excellent for many starters. Context and sample size still matter.

What if a pitcher has zero walks?

K/BB is undefined. This calculator shows a clear “no walks” state instead of an infinite ratio.

Does K/BB use innings pitched?

No. Only strikeouts and walks. Use K/9 and BB/9 when you want rates scaled to innings.
